Early Education
The first 5 years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.’ Bill Gates Early education is something which we at the school and the nursery are passionate about. It is widely documented in research that the first three – five years of a child’s life are fundamental to their overall success in life. The children learn and develop at a faster rate within the first 3 years than at any other point in their lives and it is the critical period in which to establish the firm foundations for life. Stimulating and nurturing the brain from an early age ensures that the brain develops well forming the necessary pathways for social skills, learning and the processing of information. Studies clearly show that if this window of development is missed, it is never truly made up in later education. Therefore it is essential that every child receives a high quality early education right from the very start. At the nursery we believe in educating the whole child; from social skills, to the core subjects such as literacy and numeracy to critical thinking and problem solving skills. From the very earliest group we ensure that children are surrounded by warm, positive and supportive relationships that teach the children vital social skills needed for life. Our children feel secure and confident in their environment and begin to learn about how to communicate effectively and kindly, how to work as a team, how to engage with peers, how to control their own feelings and to manage other people’s feelings; these experiences, in time, enable the children to become successful, socially confident adults, ready to tackle life’s challenges. A corner stone of what we do within the nursery is that we teach the children the key skills needed to think, learn and create, rather than just what to think and how to do it. From an early age children are supported and encouraged to develop their inquisitive natures by playing and exploring the exciting open- ended activities in their nursery environment.  Our staff also encourage our children to be active, independent and self-motivated learners; the children learn to persevere when challenge occurs and to take pride in both the process and their achievements. Staff skilfully provide opportunities for the children at the nursery to create and think critically; we challenge the children to have their own ideas, make links between their own knowledge and to problem solve through trial and error whilst working independently or as a team. These key concepts help to form the firm foundations for a successful lifelong education and later career. We ensure that there is a rich curriculum in place that covers all aspects of a child’s development and this is tailor made to meet the specific needs of each age group, further details of this can be read in the subsequent pages. The curriculum covers the essential skills such as reading, writing and mathematics but is not limited to these subjects. We seek to educate the whole child and ensure that they learn about the world around them and freely explore different ways of expressing themselves. We also work to teach children about themselves and how they can stay healthy throughout their lives. The curriculum is enriched through additional activities such as gym and dance classes, and our older children experience trips out, sports days and stage plays for their families. When children come to leave the nursery and move to Prep 2 or local school reception class, they are confident, capable and articulate and ready to tackle the next stage of their education with enthusiasm and the skills needed to not only succeed but to thrive.
